Dixieland Play-along Discography

Dixieland Fake Book Vol. 1
Dixieland Fake Book Vol. 2

This is a list only--we don't sell CDs

(It still needs much work,and will be added to as I get time, so check back regularly)

(If you want to help, eMail your ideas to me: dwlit@patriot.net
The main object is to provide beginners with lists of recordings useful for learning to play the standard and classic tunes: to learn melodies and correct chords, the classic styles, and get used to how each tune sounds. We also want to help newbies become familiar with the most important records and the musical literature. With luck, the list will turn budding musicians on to the music and motivate them to sustain their efforts.

1. The "definitive" classic version(s) of each tune that is the usual model for how it's commonly played; if there is no "definitive" version, then the record that brought the tune into the repertoire or made it popular among jazz musicians; failing that, any commonly available record from the period that has the complete tune in a standard key.

2. A readily available modern version in the usually played key, basically standard chords, with all the strains or commonly played verse, for playing along.

Recommended CDs
To hear individual tunes, or many tunes by a group or artist, try Red Hot Jazz, the best website for 1920s jazz.
Another tool for learning tunes is a computer program called Band-in-a-Box

If you accessed this table from the home page menu, it will be easier to read if you copy the entire address, paste it into the address space and "enter'; it will fill the screen: http://americanmusiccaravan.com/DFBplaCD.html

Underlined artists in the Classic Records column are links to the artists' pages on the Red Hot Jazz site; once there, scroll to the tune title and click on it. You can listen to, but can not download the RealAudio file; however, you can save the .ram link file, so you can listen without opening your browser. Create a directory for the .ram files and save them there. When you want to listen, go online and open the RealAudio or other player; when you double click on a tune in the file manager, the player will go directly to the Red Hot Jazz site and play the tune; or you can open the file from RealAudio.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
At this point, I have not checked out all the versions on the linked pages for usefulness for learning the tune, nor the keys in which they're played. As I go along, I'll delete unsuitable versions, add better ones, keys.
Conventions. Tune column: the number is the page in my Dixieland Fake Book Vol. 1; the key(s) is the commonly played key; (C)=another common key; Bb-Eb-Ab=keys of various strains; (V-C)=Verse-Chorus, the verse is commonly played.  Classic Records: name of key artist, sometimes the year, the record's key, (V-C) both verse and chorus are on the record. Female vocals are usually ca. a 5th off the common instrumental key.
Modern Records: Entry refers to the "Recommended CDs" page.
**Some tunes have a "classic" version that is commonly used as a model; many tunes are "generic"
